You have just brought your beautiful hand forged blade home. Now what? How do you care for it?
1. Take it out the sheath. Leather is a sponge and will pull water out of the air and deposit it on your blade. Instead, take your blade out and display it! You can display your sheath with it or keep it in a drawer. Pro tip - use a tag to remind you which blade the sheath belongs to if you have more than 1.
2. Keep your blade well oiled with a thin coat of oil. Wipe it down every few months- you can use mineral oil or gun oil. If you are working with one of our chef knives or any knife you use with food, please use olive oil or any other food grade oil. Pro tip - mix a few drops of essence of clove oil in with your mineral oil. Not only does it smell good, essence of clove oil is a natural rust repellent! You can also buy choji oil (oil mixed with essence of clove) on our website.
3. If your friends touch your blade, do not cut off their fingers! LOL. Human hands deposit acidic stains that can permanently mark your blade. Rather, take your soft cloth with a bit of oil and give it a rub down. Good as new!
4. What if you get a spot of rust? In wetter climates this may happen. A rain drop or a finger print is inevitable. You can get a rust eraser and give a gentle rub until your stain dissappears, then a quick swipe with your oil rag. These are also available on our website.
5. Remember to take care of the sheath! Even if it is in a drawer you want to keep it ready to carry your blade with pride. Give it a good rub down with leather conditioner every few months to keep it looking good and holding solid.
