Antique Baskethilted Backsword (Claymore) from Mid to Late 1700s

Surviving antique Scottish baskethilted backsword (claymore) from the middle to late 1700s.

It is 41 1/2" overall with a 35 1/4" tapering single edged blade with a wide central fuller and a second narrow fuller near the spine. It weighs 2 pounds 8 1/2 ounces. Point of balance is 3 1/2" from the basket. Original eel skin covered spiral fluted grip with copper wire. Bun shaped pommel. Three quarter basket for use of reins. Iron guard of rounded bars framing panels pierced with triangles and circles.

A similar sword by the same maker is on display in Dean Castle in Kilmarnock.

This sword is in great condition. It is complete and all original. It has patina and some light rust.
